How Every Platform Handles Approvals Today (Spoiler: Badly)

We spent months researching every major workflow builder’s approach to human-in-the-loop. The results were… depressing.

Make.com: The Google Sheets Hack

Make.com has no native approval module. Zero. Their 7,000+ templates, their beautiful visual builder, their enterprise pricing — and they never built an approval step.

So what do Make.com users do? They hack it.

The most common workaround: create a Google Sheet where the scenario writes output to a row, then a separate scenario polls the sheet every 5-15 minutes checking if someone changed a “Status” column from “Pending” to “Approved.”

This is not a joke. The Make.com community forum thread “Wait for Approval Workflow Possible?” is a graveyard of increasingly desperate workarounds involving Google Sheets checkbox polling, webhook callbacks through Google Apps Script, and third-party marketplace apps like “Ozy Approvals.”

Each hack burns operations (polling costs money on Make’s credit system), introduces 5-15 minutes of latency minimum, and provides zero structured feedback. When someone rejects an output, there’s no mechanism to tell the AI why it was rejected.

n8n: Doesn’t Exist

n8n has zero native approval primitives. None. The closest thing is a “Wait” node that pauses execution for a webhook callback, but there’s no approval UI, no notification system, no structured feedback.

Community members have requested approval workflows on n8n’s forum. The response has been crickets. n8n’s DNA is developer automation — data in, transform, data out. Human oversight isn’t in the architecture.

And that’s before we mention n8n’s critical security vulnerabilities. Multiple remote code execution CVEs in 2025-2026, with over 103,000 vulnerable instances identified. When your workflow builder itself isn’t secure, approval gates are the least of your problems.

Zapier: The Checkbox
